Running the gauntlet…at Cahills Crossing

Running the gauntlet…at Cahills Crossing
This is the causeway from Thé UNESCO listedKakadu National Park to the remote Aboriginal community of Oenpelli. The crossing is tidal. At low tide up to 60 saltwater crocodiles( they eat people) line the causeway waiting for the tide to bring in fish. They swim in and line up with open mouths. Some silly people like to cross the causeway on a strong incoming tide, like this. If the car was washed off, no one would help and the occupants could well be eaten. It does happen, believe me! All the lumps and bumps in the water are crocodiles. There are lots of online videos of the Cahills Crossing crocs. There are no rescue facilities nearby.

I heard about this from a sports teacher of my son. He was a native Australian. He said that this mostly happens up in the north. People are supposed to have been rescued by helicopter because they suddenly were surrounded by water full of crocodiles, due to heavy rain.

Thé crocodiles yes, are in the (tropical) North. Every year they kill a number of people. People do need to use common sense and get out and away from rising waters there.
The beaches and rivers in Northern Australia are very beautiful, but one cannot swim in them because of the crocodiles.

Seems a pretty foolhardy thing to do............risking their own and their passengers lives and well as those of anyone who may try to rescue them..!!

Nevertheless, this is a well taken documentary shot Diana!

A great shot, Diana. I remember that crossing - we went across with the right tide. Salties are the only Oz wildlife I find really worrying! Best wishes for the lockdown week. Big huggss. xx

This is downright scary Diana. Why on earth would anyone take such a risk?
