Such a terrible situations. A bad ending for 2019 and a terrible start to 2020. My heart goes out to all people who are being effect. Also my sympathies to those who have lost their lives.

After having so much to do with this situation and sitting here choking in smoke, I’d let fly a huge tirade at SmoKo if I saw him now. I am usually very polite....but am over these fires. And filled with anxiety.

Hello Diana,

Just been reading about the four thousand people who had to take shelter on the beach in Mallacoota, Victoria while the fire destroyed much of their town. Apocalyptic and terrifying barely covers what is happening to Australia. It is hard to know what to say to you except that many people around the world are thinking of you all at this terrible time.

Hi Doug...we are getting all that smoke fromMallacoota, from Lakes Entrance in NSW, and from the infernos in the Snowy Mountains here in Canberra. Can hardly breathe, so I can’t imagine how horrific it would be to have the fires in my face as well..
I feel helpless and sad. Your thoughts mean a lot, thanks. And our home in SA is safe after 12 days, the giant fire in the Adelaide Hills is contained. The heat is remorseless, though!

Oh dear, Diana. Whenever I see these fires on our UK TV, I think of my Ipernity friends over there in Australia. I do hope and pray that you and your family will remain safe. 'Apocalyptic' seems an appropriate description to all of this and your governments grave in-actions to global warming makes it seem even worse unfortunately.

Thank you so much Herb. We are 200km from these fires just now...and the air is a thick smog, 30 times the hazard limit. Will be glad to head home, which is still standing, thank goodness, but will no doubt have to drive fir several hours through this pea souper.
I am most worried about George(Tiabunna) who is in the thick of this on the east coast, where communications are down, and people fleeing into the ocean.
I hate the government with a passion, and am very angry at their lack of concern for anything other than the $.

1939 Black Friday fires 200,000 hectares (Victoria state only).
2009 Black Saturday fires 450,000 hectares (Victoria state only).
2019/20 fires 500,000 and ongoing burning. Mainly NSW and Vic with some Qld and Sth Aust.

Yes. About 67,000 in SA when when came over to Canberra last week, with the fires on KI still out of control. Ash Wed was pretty bad too..SA/Vic.
But this in Vic NSW is cataclysmic. Air is thick with choking smog here in Canberra, low visibility.
I am deeply depressed for our country, and worried about George(Tiabunna) from Ipernity. He lives on that coast near Moruya. Among all the others at risk.

Diana do take care, I am terribly sad for you and all the others who are suffering. I pray that you will all be safe

Diana, according to a daughter in China the Canberra air pollution from the fires is orders of magnitude greater than the major steel and coal city where she is...
Hard to imagine, my recollections of being there for work years ago are of extremely clear air.

It is far worse than any I have encountered in Chengdu, Delhi or Kathmandu..unbelievable!

Thanks Peter. I am desolate at the state of Australia...and it has had a slight lull, but very dangerous conditions again in the next couple of days. And some fires have just been
Burning since September.
We have been smoked senseless in Canberra...with the daily ‘air’ a deep yellow choking fug, but we are safe as is our family. We are just crossing the country again to go home. Our house escaped the fires there...so we are lucky. So many are not. And the animals....heart breaking.
Really appreciate the thoughts..

Thanks darling Sasi. We are luckily fine, but my husband was fighting fires and we almost had to leave our home. Then we went to visit family in Canberra and have been choking on dense, thick smoke and ash.
Thank you for your thoughts. I am devastated at what it happening to the country I love.

I remember the 2009 disaster and the repeats every few years since but this one seems more apocalyptic than ever. Read in the paper about the likely species extinctions. Totally horrific. Glad you're safe.
