Even nowadays, the Southern Ocean strikes the imagination in ways few other places on this planet can.

Yes...it is a wild and vast ocean.....and needs to be respected....

I've never been to sea, but I spent some time in Newfoundland back in the day. Even as a landlubber I had plenty of opportunity to learn to respect those dangerous, dangerous seas of the North Atlantic. But even there, you won't contend with this level of isolation if things go wrong. If Titanic had struck ice in the Southern ocean, she would never have been heard from at all.

What an interesting past....but what you say is true....the North Atlantic, though wild and dangerous, is not so isolated...here we are a giant country in the midst of an eternity of ocean...and the whole southern end of our 60,000 km of coastline is washed by these huge seas coming direct from Antarctica...and very remote. I had never thought before of what that may have meant for the Titanic....so true....
Thanks for the comment!
