Sturt Desert Pea

Sturt Desert Pea
Swainsona formosa, Sturt's Desert Pea, is one of Australia's best known wildflowers. It is native to the hot, remote and arid regions of central and north-western Australia, growing in dry sand and rock. They are almost impossible to cultivate in a domestic garden. This is in the remote desert of Western Australia.

Thanks...they are unpredictable...sometimes they creep along the ground, almost flat, at others, they stand up tall...

Ravishing colors! What makes them shine under such dry conditions?

I have no idea! They are extraordinary...appearing in naked patches of red sand...setting the désert ablaze. There are some variations...with a jet black eye, or a pink one. Or the whole flower in a pale coral colour with a deeper coral eye. On one Northern beach, the Sandhills were covered with them! As a southern dweller it is so exciting for me to see them...
