Fences

The former Zanci property was amalgamated into the Lake Mungo National Park in 1984. A few sheds and fences remain: it seems all were made from the local Cypress Pine (nb not "Cyprus") , a native species noted for durability. Best on black. HFF! Explored.

Definitely one to view on black (click image). This shows the interior of the old Lake Mungo woolshed , but what it cannot show is the marvellous smell of wool and lanoline, established through over a hundred years of use and still remaining 40 years after the area became National Park: so use your imaginations. :) I think I'll make this my early entry this week for HFF! Explored

Not what it was in about 1900, when it had 20 hotels, Zeehan is a small former mining town in the west of Tasmania. The imposing building on the left, once the Gaiety Theatre, houses part of a community museum. Happy Fence Friday!

Larger version in note. Dumont d'Urville is the main French base in Antarctica and the stepping-off point for expeditions to Concordia, the joint French-Italian base 1100 kilometers inland. This is immediately to the right of my previous panorama at the station: www.ipernity.com/doc/tiabunna/29909935 Those ropes in the foreground are blizzard lines. When it is pitch darkness, with the wind blowing at 150km/hr and visibility reduced to arm's length by drifting snow, it is imperative to closely follow (ie keep holding) these very specialised fences. Lookout over the former pit of the Mt Lyell mine in Tasmania. Fumes from mining and processing operations have devastated the landscape, stripping it of most vegetation and the high rainfall removing the topsoil. Happy Fence Friday!
