Bay Bridge
Since 1956, Batemans Bay has had a lifting bridge across the Clyde River for the Princes Highway which follows the coast from Sydney to Melbourne. While lifting bridges were once common, particularly in NSW, this is the last such still operating, going up daily for the tourist boat, then again on its return. Needless to say, that causes quite a bit of traffic disruption, particularly in holiday …

Watching the Barge leave
The new Batemans Bay bridge (in the background) has been largely built with the assistance of a very large barge carrying giant cranes to lift the concrete sections into place. With the main construction now almost finished, the barge recently departed again. Another of my photos is in a PiP, as is an excellent drone photo taken by "South Coast Pix" and posted on Facebook with approval for sharing.
HFF, stay safe and have a great weekend, everyone.
Last sections
One of the final sections being lowered into place for our new bridge. Since then, all have been installed.
It's so good to again be able to visit ipernity and to start my Friday by loading an image! I'm sure most of you must be feeling the same way. My very real thanks to all on the ipernity team and the outside experts who have worked (and still are working) so hard to overcome what sound like enormous problems with vast amounts of computer code, not to mention the 16 servers and the gigabytes of data.
Here's a musical link. The line "you don't know what you've got till it's gone" could apply to ipernity!
Best wishes for the weekend, stay safe and HFF, everyone.
Two bridges and a boat
While heading into town, I found myself near the front of the queue of cars stopped when our lifting bridge opened for the tourist boat (at right) to pass through the gap in the roadway beyond the boom gate. The new bridge is near complete, with work mainly now on finalising the access roadworks. It is expected to be fully open by Easter.
I'm afraid I still have little spare time, so activity in photography or online is very limited at present. HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
It's built!
The new Batemans Bay bridge is finally ready for use. I took this image just after crossing on the old bridge, which closed next day. The associated foreshore works will take some time yet to finish, as will dismantling the old bridge. View large.
HFF, stay safe and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
Two bridges
The new bridge opened for traffic on the day of Pauline's funeral and we decided to try it as we returned home, my son taking this image of the towers on the old bridge.
It didn't seem very long since the first barge arrived to begin building the bridge. The image in the PiP was taken about half an hour before the barge arrival.
HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
The two bridges
Today I went for a stroll on the new bridge, now in use, while looking at the old bridge from a new angle. It is currently being dismantled. Although the details at top right suggest this was taken at 135mm, that is because I forgot to change a setting - the lens is actually 14mm.
The lifting span
The new bridge provides a great vantage point to capture a shot of the lifting span of the old bridge, with the estuary of the Clyde River in the background.
It's again that time of the week, so HFF and all the best for a great weekend, everyone.
Closed off!
Looking across the old bridge, with a clutter of working equipment in the foreground. While the new bridge is far more elegant, it is to a standard design and near identical to other new bridges right up the coast of New South Wales. The "industrial style" old bridge was distinctively different and had more or less become the symbol of Batemans Bay.
The lifting span.
HFF and best wishes for the weekend, everyone.
Bridges and Bay
The new bridge at left, looking out into Batemans Bay past the old bridge which is now being dismantled. The image in the PiP (also below) shows the barge which will handle most of the dismantling, with the small jetty specially built to land the bridge material.
Well, it's Friday again, so I wish everyone a very Happy Fence Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend.
