Thank you, Roger. See my note to Keith below. The idea of the group is interesting, do you think we could find enough improbable objects to make it work?

Meteorologists use them to capture the number of hours of direct sunlight each day, as well as its intensity.

A cracking shot George with spot on focus as depth of field..!!

Full points, Keith! This is indeed a Campbell-Stokes Sunshine Recorder, as was being used by our Weather Bureau at the time. By way of detail for those interested, a strip of special blue cardboard, with markings for hours, was inserted every day (visible in the image). As the sun moved around, when it was shining it burnt a mark or track on the cardboard. At the end of the day the time was measured against the hour markings, to give the duration of actual sunshine. Technology has since moved on to electronics!

Thanks George...............technology may have moved on, but it doesn't always look as beautiful as this!

Thank you for your comprehensive explanation,
I just thought, that this glass bulb would focus the sun rays
and could burn a hole into the material below.
But I could not imagine what the purpose of this
device should be!

Obviously not an up to date sunshine hours recorder, and I've seen modern versions still recording the sunshine.
