Yes, that's also my writing history in Queensland, Amelia, right down to the slate! When the first ball point pens came out, we were not allowed to use them: writing had to be done with a nib. :-).

Joining in the general nostalgia for fountain pens. And while we were past slates in school, our desks in first grade had ink wells and oh, wasn't that the bane of our mothers who had to get the stains out of our clothes! But then, we also wore aprons at that time to fend off the worst.
