23:100 Strangers - Pam

23:100 Strangers - Pam
This picture is 23 in my "100 Strangers" project. It's far too long since my previous posting for this! I really enjoy visiting the Michelago May Fair though, so that seemed a great venue to seek some suitable subjects.

Pam was very busy running the curry stand in the food area, so when she took a well-earned break for lunch I interrupted her meal with a dopey request for a photo for my project. Although she would have been justified in tipping lukewarm curry over my lens, Pam kindly spared the time to tell me a little about herself. She moved to the area some years ago, believing that a rural lifestyle is the best for raising her boys. She considers the community important and appreciates the greater feeling of community spirit in the country.

Thank you very much for your willing cooperation, Pam. I hope you like the image - and I do apologise for making your lunch go cold. :)

Thank you very much, Bev, I have found this project challenging both in a personal sense (overcoming nervousness) and photographically. I became involved to push myself out of my 'comfort zone' which usually results in people-less images. The challenge is to not just snap a passing secret shot of some stranger, but to engage them in conversation and ask them to sit for a portrait. To my delight, almost everyone is very receptive when I explain what it is about: and Pam was a charming and very helpful subject.

I had thought about continuing this project to finality at the other site, but having just visited there I found it nearly unusable. So I shall continue here, with my images on the ipernity 100 Strangers (Lite) group - and encourage others to challenge themselves with this project.

Pam is a lovely lady. Very rich colours. The light looks a little difficult. Nice story of a country lifestyle.

Thank you Gillian. You're quite right about the challenging lighting, at the 'May Fair' it's either bright sunshine or shade under a tent - with a resulting colour cast depending on the canvas colour: either way with lots of contrast somewhere. For this shot I tried to reduced the effect a little by firing an off-camera flash as fill lighting.
