Usually your skin first starts getting red and itchy, then blisters can from- it's a bit like burns. Some caterpillars are so bad that fire services have to remove them wearing full protection gear...

Yes Gudrun, I have heard of one Moth species that colonise areas and they have to be fenced off to protect the locals. Can't remember the species off hand but they are found in England.
