I'll be dammed

23 Jan 2020 4 1 80
Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon Dam form the 2nd largest reservoir in the US. The Hoover Dam & Lake Mead are more famous because they are ranked #1. Hoover dam is higher (726 ft to Glen Canyon Dam's 583 ft above the river) Glen Canyon is wider (1560 ft to Hoover Dam's 1244 ft) Hoover Dam's relative proximity to Las Vegas may also help to get more tourist visitors. . Photographer's Point

This view of Monument Valley is famous and impressive and many photographers have captured the scene. However did you notice what is different on the image shown on the sign ? Did you notice the shadow ?! The timing & weather must be just right to align the setting sun to cast that shadow. . Here are some more photos from this WINTERTRIP into the desert south-west . "Nationwide Coverage" according to SPRINT's own ma…

18 Jan 2020 1 61
They call it NATIONWIDE !! -- can you believe that ? I drove for 6 hours on a major highway from Flagstaff,AZ to Moab,UT -- and not a beep. The map confirms it. The T-Mobile network did not fare much better -- occasionally I saw "2G, emergency calls only" notifications. Not one 3G or above !! As I stopped along the way in motels & diners, everyone advised AGAINST SPRINT & T-MOBILE. Few mentioned AT&T and nearly everyone suggested to use VERIZON. To be fair, VERIZON also has the by far most expensive phone plans. In some areas, you may have to bite this bullet, to get any cell-phone signal at all. . snap08478 edit

A Rough Ride through town (Route 66)

11 Jan 2020 2 88
This was a rough ride in more than one way. Driving through this weather and snow, only having 2WD and summer tires, was the FIRST part. All along the way, I was told the road to Grand Canyon would be clear and no problem. At first I doubted it ... just look at the snow covered road in this town. In the end, there was no problem . The SECOND part of this rough road began when I wanted to edit & upload all that 4k footage I had gathered from the dash-cam. That meant finding a suitable tool for editing videos. For now, OPENSHOT & SHOTCUT appear to be sufficient to manage the basic tasks I'm asking for. www.openshot.org free, open source, cross-platform video editor www.shotcut.org free, open source, cross-platform video editor kdenlive.org/en free, open source, cross-platform video editor also available for W10 The above sequence originally was shot in 4k using the small cam on the dashboard. In hindsight I think, I better had used 2k or regular 1080p. As you can see, this sequence was comprised of several shot and one of them even had to be sliced to cut the long wait while pumping gas (I forgot to stop recording) As part of the post-processing I applied some brightness & contrast changes before rendering. And I doubled the playback speed to further shorten the playback time. All that I was able to run on a low-end laptop and OPENSHOT. . Welcome to "Motel 66"

10 Jan 2020 74
This is the end of my 1st day driving Route 66 in winter and is the (failed) attempt to get away from the snow storm. Please say Hello to "MOTEL 66" -- it had one last vacancy and provided me with the much appreciated shelter from the snow. Of course, I had to provide them with my credit card number ... Colorado River slipping through the cracks

09 Jan 2020 2 1 53
This area is "Marble Canyon" and you can spot it on the "drone" view : www.ipernity.com/doc/stargazer95050/49612446 . For early natives and settles, this must have been quite a daunting obstacle to cross. Today it is easy with a pair of bridges. But those are the only ones for some hundreds of miles downstream. . "Drone" view of the Colorado

08 Jan 2020 2 1 90
This view puts this landscape into perspective : The previous video was filmed from the Vista Point close to the edge of the top plateau. Below at Bitter springs starts another plateau. And further down you finally find the river. At the Grand Canyon, this is getting more extreme as the height between the top of the rim and the river increases to up to 5000ft !! . snap08464

The Colorado River vanished -- Can you spot it ?

05 Jan 2020 1 55
It is amazing to see the river completely disappear from sight. At this point, it runs ~ 400ft (130m) below the surface of the surrounding plateau. this image shows the landscape in a 3D ipernity.com/doc/stargazer95050/49612446 .
