Avebury Stones

Avebury Stones
Taken from English Heritage site: Avebury henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. Built and much altered during the Neolithic period, roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, the henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village. Within the henge is the largest stone circle in Britain - originally of about 100 stones - which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles.

Lovely shot again Rosa with great light on the stones. Your notes certainly add much to the story of the picture.

I lived about ten miles from here in the late 70's Doug and visited it a lot. It was a time when they were filming 'Children of the Stones' which my daughter loved at the time, even though I thought it was a little scary for her! Thanks for your kind comments.

Wonderful light there! Sadly I have never been to Avebury, from what I can see on your photo I'd much prefer it to Stonehenge.

Oh yes it is far better than Stonehenge Gudrun. It is vast and all walkable if you have the time. Pleased you like this shot :)

Hi Rosa,

Great to look at full size, so much detail. Loads of little figures crawl out of the woodwork, and a great sky to match. I like it!
.
Best Wishes

Hi Peter, I think that every house in the village has a stone near them. To see it from the air must be spectacular. Thank you for your kind comments.

Best wishes, Rosa.
