My grandfather (L) and his siblings, c. 1896

My grandfather (L) and his siblings, c. 1896
Submitted to the Vintage Photos Theme Park for the theme, "Photos in Photos". The photo of the woman on the wall is of their mother, Hulda, who had recently died. Their father married her sister, Christina, and they had a fourth child, Helen, who was an infant when this photo was taken. A picture of their father, Charles, is on the small table.

Alan Mays, Deborah Lundbech, arts enthusiast, Smiley Derleth and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

Love this photo - but how sad.
I think I remember a discussion with this topic before - about the marrying of siblings in those days.
Seems so weird to us now.

Yes, it seems that it was almost an understood obligation in some circles and causes me to wonder how it was most frequently received by the sister and the widowed husband. I suspect that, as usual, the woman was most often taken advantage of. For the man, it was a convenient and reasonably familiar replacement for child care, housekeeping, etcetera.
