Railway stations in London
Folder: Railways including tramways
This is a fairly random collection of photographs which have the stations, rather than the trains, as significant parts of the views. There are one or two by my father, but his emphasis was almost always the locomotives. Having said that, there is a collection of photos of Liverpool Street Station, that I made to enable him to see the renovation works carried out in the 1990s, by which time he was…

Photo, with reflections, from an office in No.1 London Bridge.
This view has already changed radically and that station is undergoing a complete rebuilding with the platforms that served stations further into London - Charing Cross, Cannon Street, Waterloo East & Blackfriars - being turned into terminus platforms and the existing terminus platforms serving the through trains.

Imagine the effect that light engine movements would have on today's jam-packed Waterloo!
I seem to remember being at Vauxhall seeing some of these big beasts gently clanking past on their way between Waterloo and Stewarts Lane shed. Whether it was on this occasion or not I can't be sure.

I find it curious that the panel at the eastern end shows the stations at the outer end of the District Line, but also includes places like Grays, Tilbury and Southend that weren't on the District Line or in fact on the Underground. Places in similar relationships to the Underground network, but in other directions don't get mentioned.

00 Guinness Paddington Station 25 2 2023

Busy railway stations are often chosen as places to advertise products by handing out free samples. These are usually foods, drinks and sometimes cosmetics. Guinness' new alcohol-free stout was being distributed from large, wheeled ice-buckets. There were half a dozen of these around the concourse, so one could collect a number of cans. I drew the line at two, as my day on the Elizabeth Line had still a couple of hours to run and I didn't want to carry any more than two.

It must be difficult to maintain this lovely old canopy. This is one of the busiest small stations in London. Trains pass through here every couple of minutes, in and out of Victoria Station, one London's major termini.
