They were a rather bloody bunch, if my memory serves me right. I seem to remember that my history teacher, back way over half a century ago, was rather annoyed that I was far more interested in Aztecs, Assyrians, Etruscans and the like, than the English Kings and Queens and european wars, that I was supposed to be studying.
I am not sure what a psychologist would make of your interpretation, but I don't have an interesting alternative. As usual I can't remember exactly how I got to this end product.
