It is a never-ending job, John. I know I was responsible for keeping a fairly modern (1950s) London church properly maintained for a number of years. Nowadays getting a ladder out and climbing onto the church hall roof with a pot of bitumen sealant is not acceptable. Contractors are expensive. Those needing scaffolding even more so.
The flint churches have a constant battle with lime mortar failures. Often because it wasn't used at some stage, with modern mortars used instead and has had to be reinstated, sometimes in a patchwork application.
