Hastings to St Leonard's Warrior Square 22 6 2023

Hastings to St Leonard's Warrior Square 22 6 2023
St Leonard's Warrior Square station is where the tiny silhouette of a train can be seen at the far end of the tunnel. That station sits between two tunnels, so you can see the shadow of the curiously-named Bo-Peep tunnel beyond the train.
Across about half of the south of England, the electrical power supply for trains comes from a third rail, on the outside of the running track. In stations the third rail is positioned on the side of the tracks furthest from the platforms. On other stretches of track the third, power rails are often on the outer edge of the tracks, as can be seen in the area of the bridge in the view above. The railways have to maintain fencing all the way along the tracks and post warning notices about the dangers of touching the live rails where ever the public may get close to railway lines.

Thank you, Anton. The bridge is the key to the appearance of the scene. The 19th century railway builders often made structures that were beautiful as well a functional.

It's a bit like Stonehenge at the Summer Solstice, things have to be aligned accurately! The Sun needs to be shining on St Leonard's and having a train in the station adds to the impact. As it happens this was just a spur of the moment shot while waiting for a train back home.

Nicely composed with the track curving under the bridge with the elaborate parapet , the third rail always seems a strange way to supply the power, I suppose it was cheaper than installing overhead wires

Thanks, Peter.
I had walked along the platform while waiting for a train. I belong to a railway website. One of the groups collects photos and information about railway signals and signalling. I was interested in the signals, but then noticed that I could see the little train at the station at the other end of the tunnel. So it was a chance opportunity that I took.
