I think that the key to this type of image is the use of the 'drop shadow' effect. It takes the shapes off the paper and, while they are not all connected physically, the fact that they appear to be all on the same level, above the 'paper' gives them a sculptural look, in my view. To me however they are just doodles - some of which work out better than others.
