They are among the earliest 'dual-fuel' locos, I guess. Although there are other diesel electrics, they generally use diesel to generate electricity, whereas these can use third rail electricity or diesel generated electricity. They must be the longest lived so far. Now of course it's the coming traction option to allow trains to continue to destinations beyond the end of the 'wires'. Many of the 73s have been up-engined, some coming out of the preservation lines to return to mainline duties.
