The deciduous oaks are starting to drop their leaves. 5x7 paper negative, 3 minute exp.

Sutter's Fort Oak

20 Oct 2012 1 2 564
Continuing the theme of oaks! This beautiful oak is at Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, California. It was brought all the way from John Sutter's birthplace in Kandern, Baden, Germany. The Native Sons and Native Daughters of the Golden West planted it here on July 19th, 1939. Taken with my Goat Rock Cam . It's on a 5x7 paper negative, and the fov is about 90 degrees so you're looking almost straight up near the top of this picture.

pinhole oaks

15 Oct 2012 3 1 469
First photo in a new flickr set for Pinhole Trees This was a 5 minute 20 second exposure in my Goat Rock Cam onto 5x7 paper. Goat Rock is a place on the Sonoma Coast, but also the name of a coffee sold by our local coffee company Taylor Maid Farms . The camera is made from a coffee can, is about f256, and has a field of view close to 90 degrees.

Helen Putnam Oaks

04 Oct 2012 2 1 470
I walk by these oaks very often. Just on the other side is one of my favorite views in all of Sonoma County. This is a straight 5x7 print. I'm very new at this but this print came out better than I expected. On a whim this roll was shot entirely "sunny 16" with no metering at all, and this one looked like it would be the most difficult to print so I did it first. Little did I know it was going to happen, but my old Weston meter has just stopped working, so now I'll be shooting this 120 folder "sunny 16" for a while longer whether I want to or not! I guess I'm glad for the practice and also some confidence because most of the frames came out just fine.

Doran Beach Fog

27 Sep 2012 221
This afternoon it was warm inland and foggy at the coast. It was an excellent day to walk at the beach. Tide was out just right, little waves like this, pelicans diving... I walked past Pinnacle Gulch and this sailboat kept abreast of me the whole way. My dog Mango loves this place, and so do I.

Cabinet Mountains

In the Idaho Panhandle. Contact print from a paper negative, 90 year old Kodak 1A Autographic Jr. F45, 1.5s. I got eaten alive by mosquitoes to get this one. Taken near the fire lookout on Lunch Peak.

Mt Shasta

26 Jul 2012 323
Taken with 90 year old Kodak No. 1A Autographic Jr. and paper negative. F45 about 1.5 seconds with yellow filter. Developed after we came home about 3 weeks later. I'm still learning how to do this but it is a lot of fun.

Reaching Oaks

09 Jul 2012 3 289
Oak branches reaching to the sun. 8 Feb - 6 July 2012 This will be the last one for a while. There was just one more after this but I didn't think it was good enough to post here. You can see all I've done at: Solargraphy Map

Spring Lake

Spring Lake park near Santa Rosa. Another paper negative in my 90 year old Kodak Autographic. 3 second exposure at f45.

Sunrises over the Petaluma Hills

05 Jul 2012 262
Looking South from Helen Putnam Park. 14 February - 5 July 2012 You can also view a Solargraphy Map That spot in the middle makes me think it might not have been completely dry when I scanned it... might try a second scan with this one. ( 8Jul: Nope.. I scanned it again and it's still there. It's on the paper. )

Bales in Two Rock Valley

03 Jul 2012 300
Paper negative from my Kodak No. 1A Autographic Jr. Okay, I'm getting carried away with it but I'm having too much fun making these! The camera has rather shallow DOF even at F22-- the closest foreground is simply out of focus-- not motion blur. This scene had about 5 stops variation. The haze is real. Both my contact prints of this one have a funny out of focus blotch near the middle... not sure why. ( edit: Turned out to be just a smudge on the glass I was using. )

Llano

03 Jul 2012 2 305
Santa Rosa, California is in a wide flat plain, or llano , where the Laguna de Santa Rosa flows on its way to the Russian River. There are several places with scattered old Valley and Black Oaks. This oak has been enjoying the beautiful sunsets... 10 March - 1 July 2012 Ilford MGIV. You can also view a Solargraphy Map

Spring Hill Road

30 Jun 2012 2 345
This is a contact print made from a paper negative. The photo was taken with a 90 year old Kodak No. 1A Autographic Jr. The light leaks were sorted out just by throwing a black tee shirt over the camera. The tee has printed on it: "What is the speed of dark?" -- isn't that just perfect? The contrast is starting to get under control by pre-flashing the paper and using a yellow filter. It was windy and there is some motion blur, but this contact print looks a bit softer than the negative. The barbed wire is sharp on the negative, and the contact print really looks better than this scan suggests. This was mostly a test of the exposure and I'm pretty happy that it's getting close at about ISO 3 with the yellow filter. What didn't go right is that the photographer forgot that the viewfinder on this camera reverses the image! The copse of trees was supposed to be on the left, so we missed Mt. St. Helena and the hills across the valley! But I've always liked those little rolls in the hills to the left of the trees too, so I'll pretend this is where I meant to point the camera!

Passing Through

Oaks and 114 sunrises at the Llano de Santa Rosa. 3 March - 24 June 2012. This is my favorite so far.

Solargraphic Eclipse

20 May 2012 3 376
~6 Hour exposure 5x7 in. Ilford MGiv at Whiskeytown Lake in Northern California during the Annular Eclipse on 20 May 2012. The can's small diameter created a somewhat anamorphic projection. The eclipse is visible as a narrowing of the sun's trace with two darker patches. The lower patch and the gaps before sunset were due to clouds. I'm glad I took some solargraphy cans with me!

This is can "#1", the same can I used as a 1 week test. Ilford RC MGIV 5x7 paper. I think the barbed wire looks neat, which is good because a lot are going to have barbed wire in them! I probably should have angled the can up a bit more. Since this was a test, I didn't paint the can like I have all the ones that have been placed in more public locations. I was thinking of the paint as camouflage, but this can started rusting so that's another good reason to paint them if you use steel cans! Here is my Solargraphy Map
