Dixon lived here ..

Dixon lived here ..
Sunday Challenge 56 - numbers

My dad, at my eldest brother’s insistence - he was home on leave - rented a television for the wedding of Princess Margaret and from then on I was allowed to watch Dixon of Dock Green as it was considered wholesome enough for my innocent eyes and ears. (To be honest I much preferred listening to Radio Luxembourg despite the static from the old radiogram. Anyone else remember Horace Bachelor from Keynsham?)

Dixon of Dock Green was a BBC police procedural television series about daily life at a fictional London police station, Dock Green, with the emphasis on petty crime, successfully controlled through common sense and human understanding. Each episode ended with Dixon giving a little monologue, saluting to camera and saying “Goodnight All”. It ran from 1955 to 1976.

Jack Warner (Dixon) looked nothing like the cartoon character pictured here but the uniform is reminiscent of the one Warner wore in the series.

Gillian Everett, Kawasirius, J. Gafarot, Nick Weall and 19 other people have particularly liked this photo

How cute! I've heard of Dixon of Dock Green but have never seen it. I certainly do remember Radio Luxemburg, we used to listen to that from Germany too;-)

Never even heard of it, but will keep an eye, never know it can be broadcasted again... I follow UK series on BBC, love Midsomer murders, Endeavour... and a lot others, the list is too long to state here !
Love the policeman figure here, very cute and humoristic.

Doubt that it will be rebroadcast, it's not gritty enough for todays's audiences.

I found the "copper" amusing too!!

That was one my brother and I were allowed to see, too. My only memory of the actual program was an episode where they dealt with cruelty to a child within in a family, which left a strong impression. My other recollection is how all the kids on the playground would have seen the same episode the night before and how we all would talk it over.
I would have seen the '62 - through '64 episodes.

You're doing better than me, I can't remember any individual episodes tho' I can understand why that one stuck with you. I do remember his 'son-in-law' who was rather tasty looking ...

Dixon of Dock Green.............wow, that's a blast from the past. Such a great series at the time, but seems remarkably tame compared to the varies police series that followed it.

A very nice find and a charming photo Maggie...........thanks for the memories :-))

I think I may have found a relative of your policeman: www.ipernity.com/doc/keithburton/46485558

Nope, never heard of that series, Maggie. Although they've been showing several British series on German TV...dubbed into German, grrrrr, it sounds funny though. I would have watched it :-)

I hate dubbing too Edna - I'd rather have subtitles and actually hear the actors' voices.

I do remember staying with our close Dutch friends in the early 60s and going to the cinema to a film that was English with Dutch subtitles; we were laughing way in front of the rest of the audience and received a lot of stares!

I remember Horace Bachelor from Keynsham he was to do with Football Pools somehow or other.

Remember Dixon well enough too, the pace of life was much gentler back then.

Thanks for jogging my memories

Dear old Horace from K E Y N S H A M!!!

And it seems indeed a different gentler world, but it was also the Cold War, presidential assassinations etc, - perhaps it was us just being kids ...

Je trouve qu’une certaine nostalgie se détache de cette photographie. L’humour en plus ce qui ne gâte rien. Excellent.
