I'm sorry, Pam. Here, land is won with the mud that the tide carries with it. This "fence" is a fascine, normally stuffed with brushwood, which filters the mud out of the water and slows down the reflux. The land areas are interspersed with ditches that are regularly silt. The mud is thrown onto land and raises these salt marshes, which are often grazed by the sheep. Somewhere I have a picture where the trenches are muddy.

I understand.

I am English.. and have lived on the Romney Marshes and also in the Fen lands of East Anglia.

Its a landscape I know and it has a haunting beauty all of its own.
