Dalmation Pelican (+PiP)

Dalmation Pelican (+PiP)
Since last year WWT Arundel has introduced some Dalmation Pelicans to the reserve. Their new pond and surroundings are really lovely, but not very photography friendly. Unless the birds are on the water it is almost impossible to get a photo of one without a fence in the background. You'll note that their wings are clipped as well, which is obviously to stop them flying off........but such a shame :-(

There's another image in the PiP. Thanks for looking!

Amelia, Patrick Brandy, Puzzler4879, Gudrun and 20 other people have particularly liked this photo

You did well to get such a good shot then Keith. That's what you call a beak!! I love the rippling reflection. A fabulous PiP! What a great look, and the wing colours show beautifully!

I shall look forward to more shots from this place. Have a good Wednesday.

Great to see Pelicans in our waters but a shame to see they have had their wings clipped. Nice captures here.

Keep safe. Herb

Outstanding capture Keith and a great job with the 100-400 too. Welney was a disappointment most of the over winter birds had left for their respective breeding grounds. If I were a Pelican I would find that quiet frustrating. Free but not free to leave.

A cross between a Dalmatian and a pelican! Who woulda thunk it? Science marches on.

And a great capture. Keith.

An extravagantly beautiful creature like a feathered seaplane. In any case, it looks like a photograph taken in its natural environment. Stay safe and healty Keith.

Thanks Wilhelm. I don't like the way they've been clipped.........but surely they could have just removed the flight feathers!

They are very handsome birds, you caught it well! Pity about the wing clipping but I suppose it's either that or having them in an aviary...

Thanks Gudrun. I'd rather see them in the wild than have their wings clipped like that, it's not as if they're an endangered species that need to be bred in captivity.

Next time I go I'm going to ask why it's been done like that..............

Well, I guess they would fly off otherweise! I'm not sure how well they'd do in the wild in your climate...

“A wonderful bird is the Pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belly can.
He can hold in his beak
Enough food for a week!
But I'll be darned if I know how the hellican?”

Lovely shots - both. I have seen them in St.James' Park in London, but I don't know if the wings were clipped or not. I have to assume that they were or they'd have flown to better places. ;-)
