Thanks Thérèse. Ringing is quite common. It's so the location and condition of the birds can be noted and tracked. They all have a unique number on the rings.

A lot of birds on Skokholm are ringed. It is a bird observatory and the staff spend a great deal of time catching and ringing birds. Details are then recorded centrally by the British Ornithological Society and are used to track birds round the world. When I stayed, we were luck enough to be allowed to help the licensed ringers do their work ;-)
