Cowdray House

Cowdray House
Cowdray House (or Cowdray Ruins as it is now known) stands in the grounds of the Cowdray Estate, Midhurst, West Sussex and is the remains of one of England's most important Tudor houses. In 1793 it caught fire which destroyed most of the property. Except for work to make it safe it remained that way until March 2007 when it opened to the public after works funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, the Cowdray Estate and the local community. (information from the Cowdray Heritage website).

Best viewed large, on black. Thank you.

Another historic place of which I was unaware - and yet I used to visit so many and thought I knew most of them! Perhaps most of my UK travels were pre 2007, which must account for it!
Fine shot, Keith!

It's a very picturesque ruin Keith! I have not travelled very extensively in West Sussex, but it's on the list!

It still manages to convey past splendour, a fabulous shot! I have never before heard of this, another one for my long list of places to visit....

It's a great picture and I'm sure it was very grand. However, I would much rather live in the gorgeous round house. It's very interesting to see though, and I would love to visit it!

It's well worth a look Eunice, even though you can only do so from the outside as far as I know. I understand what you mean about preferring the round house..............in Tudor times, this mansion would have been grand...........but also drafty and cold in the winter and hot and smelly in the summer!

A fine capture Keith. Just the kind of building that I too tend to photograph quite often. Looks like it was a great house in its day. Well done.

Cheers, Herb
