After the pink form of this orchid species has almost bloomed out, the white forms have started blooming. Looks nice sprinkled in among the pitcher plants.

I had hoped for a nicer presentation of the orchids this year, but after all of the heavy rain we have had in the past two weeks, the flowers are a bit beat up. Nevertheless, they do make somewhat of a statement in the bog garden...

The sun sneaked behind the clouds for just a moment, so I decided to go outside and photograph the Common Grass-pink orchids that just started opening in my front yard bog garden. This is the rare white form of this species.

This was a whirlwind day in the Green Swamp and surrounding area of Brunswick County, North Carolina (including Boiling Spring Lakes) with three good friends: Kelvin Taylor, Melissa McCormick, and Hope Brooks. We were able to see many examples of Native Orchids, Pitcher Plants, Sundews, and Venus' Fly-traps as well as several other rare and unusual wildflower species in their native setting.

The typical, magenta form of the Common Grass-pink orchids are about at peak bloom in my front yard bog garden in Greenville, South Carolina. They seem to be comfortable with their placement among the native Pitcher Plants that have been growing there for many years. Their color really brightens up the bog garden now that the Pitcher Plants are through blooming. In a few weeks, the white form of the Common Grass-pink orchids should be coming into bloom...

A long day trip down to the Francis Marion National Forest to photograph native orchids. Thanks to some well-placed hints from my friend, Jeff Jackson, I managed to locate a large population of Cleistesiopsis divaricata or Large Rosebud orchid as well as some other showy wildflowers.
