Calopogon tuberosus
Orchids in the front yard Bog Garden
|
|
I returned home after almost a week in the North Carolina mountains, and here is what I found in the front yard Bog Garden! The Calopogon tuberosus or Common Grass Pink orchids are in full bloom. The tall plants in the background are carnivorous plants called Pitcher Plants. The tiny white flowers in the foreground are a wetland plant called Carolina False Pimpernel. What a welcoming sight...

Results of a long but rewarding day trip to the South Carolina coastal plain -- the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley County, South Carolina, to be specific. Thanks to my good friend Dr. Richard Porcher, who joined me on a portion of this trip, I was able to locate and photograph the federally Endangered, Schwalbea Americana or American chaffseed .
For the complete trip report, please go to Jim's Blog .

Just a few shots of the Grass-pink orchids (white form) that are blooming in my bog garden. Taking pictures of white flowers in direct sunlight is a no-no, but I did it anyway...

I've been monitoring my front yard bog garden for the past few days, and believe the orchids are at peak bloom. So, I just got back from photographing them in the evening light.

After the pink form of this orchid species has almost bloomed out, the white forms have started blooming. Looks nice sprinkled in among the pitcher plants.
