Just managed to find this on the map. I didn't know Wolvercote extended East of the canal, or had a church, not that (apart from the church) there's anything to photograph anywhere in the village.

There is/was a paper mill somewhere.

The aerial view show a large factory or industrial unit at the NW side of the village. Not pretty.

Doh. Could have done it today. I was in South Hinksey just 2 hours ago.

I finally managed to get the famous shot of the distant spires from where you took yours, the hill behind Chilswell Farm.

It's a nice walk from Sount Hinksey via the nature reserve at Chilswell Copse, but my 8lb tripod, which I lugged all the way there and back felt half as heavy again as it did a decade ago.

Was it worth the effort?

A matter of opinion; you're seen the picture. It was the best I could do; the perfect shot needs exceptionally clear visibility and a good lens, not the old film camera telephoto and 3X converter that I have. Also there is sheeting covering one of the main buildings (which hence couldn't be included) and also a gigantic yellow crane, which I was at least able to airbrush out.

But it was satisfying that I finally got this picture which had been on my wish list for ages, to find that I can still hump a heavy tripod and other gear up a hill, and to use the converter which I bought specially and solely to take this picture on the full-frame Sony A7. It was also convenient to do this on my way home from the Cotswolds yesterday, when (at 7pm) the sun was in the right place and low.

If I'd planned it properly I'd have driven to Boar's hill, which is nearer than South Hinksey to the vantage point, and walked from there.

Your next trip must be to the JR West Wing. They have lifts there.

I'd sooner go to the JR Ewing.

Aw. Someone got there before me with the JR joke.

That's a sensational POV and the surrounds are glorious, but presumably one has to take it through window glass which isn't great for image quality.

Ask if you can go up on the roof.

You would have to pass yourself off as a maintenance man.

I could claim to be a window cleaner, but they'd see through it.

If I could manage that, the temptation to throw myself off would be too great.

A German acquaintance tells me: "I've looked at about half of your 36 pages of Flickr images. You show a lot of idyllic pictures from an ideal England, as Germans know it from Miss Marple films with Margaret Rutherford or the TV series "All Creatures Great and Small".

I've told him that it's exactly what I do endeavour to do, but he (note "ideal England") clearly realises that this isn't the 21st Century reality.

To make them really idyllic, you should include the odd tramp
with a red spotted kerchief on the end of stick.
