The seafront is almost all level, with just one stretch of a couple of hundred yards or less where the promenade carries on level but the road goes over a hump about fifteen foot high. There used to be wooden breakwaters or groynes along most of the middle of the beach, but when they rotted it was decided that a shingle bank would act as our sea defence and diggers, huge trucks and bulldozers reform it a couple of times a year.
