Camp Cadiz

Camp Cadiz
One of the many camping areas located in the Shawnee National Forest. I was here in 1988 with a big Boy Scout meeting. Several troops from all over Southern Illinois camped and hiked here for the weekend. I remember that it was in October or thereabouts because one night, it got below freezing while we were camping.

This particular picture was taken when we were on a 7-mile hike that the 11 year olds in the troop I was with referred to as "The 7-Mile Death March." What were they complaing about? I had all the cooking utensils, food and my camping stuff in my backpack. All they had to carry was their canteens!

Back in the early 90s I went with a group of geology students to describe rocks in the Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park in Missouri. I'd been there a number of times in the past in November and it was usually pretty nice fall weather. But this trip it was blowing snow all day! Most of the students slept in their cars and I kept my coveralls on in my sleeping bag. About 12:30 that Night it was like someone turned on all the lights on the planet with all kinds of hammering going on. Much too cold to go see what it was about I stayed deep in my warm sleeping bag. The next morning I was surprised to see a Boy Scout City had sprung up next to us! I'd been to some pretty big camporees as a scout, but I can't remember seeing any this big! Missouri set a record cold spell that night!
