Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival

Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival
This time an image from 2011.
Bridgwater claims to be the home of carnival , origins can be traced back to the Gunpowder plot of 1605 ,
Pictured is Baron Von Schmidtts World Famous Flying Circus the entry by Masqueraders Carnival Club.
Floats (locally called carts) have a maximum length of 100 feet, contain many thousands of lamps and can be powered by generators over 1 megawatt in size.
The procession contains over 100 entries and takes over Two hours to pass a given point

Thank you Joan, The people of Bridgwater and now the rest of the county have worked so hard to keep the tradition alive and growing, it really does compare to any carnival in the world.
The capture of Guy Fawkes and the celebration that followed was the start of all this and 409 years later it is still going strong plus it raises lot of money for local charities.

Although my family lived at Highbridge, six miles north of Bridgy, I was away at school at that time of year and then I moved to London to work. So I only got to go one year, back in the late 60s. My main recollection is actually walking along the Carnival route in an extended pub crawl. I don't think the glasses ever went back to the same pub. It was a terrific event. The floats are not just used for the one carnival, but often appear in other carnivals in neighbouring Somerset towns, which logical as they originate from communities from quite a wide area. I assume that is still the case - I left Somerset for the big city in 1966! Another trip down memory lane - thanks Roger.

Thanks Phil, As you rightly say following Bridgwater the carts visit a further 6 towns on the County circuit , This in turn has spawned a number of other smaller circuits in the Somerset, East Devon and Dorset areas, Bridgwater provides the largest number of clubs but Mid Somerset and Ilminster contribute some good numbers.
It is a much bigger and better organised event these days and gives visitors a full days entertainment thanks I believe to the Arts Council and others.

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Ruesterstaude club
Thank you, they were at that time virtually all using 1mw generators to power 30000 100wt lamps and the many electric motors that powered all the moving parts but with the introduction of LED lighting generator size has reduced dramatically,

A fantastic image Roger. So clear and great detail. I usually go to Glastonbury Carnival but one year, hopefully this year, I would like to see the first, at Bridgwater.
Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
The atmosphere is unique in Bridgwater partially because of expectations and partially because it's the first and is now a full day event rather than just a procession
