I used to work with a guy who always joked that at a little radio station he worked at out in the middle of nowhere (his first radio job), the station was off the air one morning because a cow had damaged the transmission line. Since then, I've learned that many radio stations operate from agricultural farming/pasture areas. Transmission towers erected near houses, high rises, and other city obstructions seldom get the coverage that can be gained by locating the towers in a more remote area, free from many zoning restrictions, where you have lots of acreage to build more towers (for directional arrays) and are often able to transmit with increased power and a more efficient ground system (as an area rich in soil with few trees around it conducts much better than asphalt-surrounded land full of obstructions). Such is the case in Shreveport for the company I work for. We can see all of the high-rise casinos off in the distance, but this cow pasture and farmland serves as our transmission point to send out the best possible signal.
