Wallis Lake and hinterland

Wallis Lake and hinterland
At last we went to Cape Hawke Lookout. Fabulous views from the 8 metre high tower there. Very windy day, with the tower swaying slightly. Looking towards Forster, Wallis Lake, Tuncurry, and the hinterland

Booti Booti National Park, New South Wales, Australia

Cape Hawke was named by Captain James Cook on 12 May 1770, honouring Edward Hawke who was First Lord of the Admiralty.

Thanks Jean, we really enjoyed the short hike, quite steep steps but worth the effort.

Thanks George. Well worth a visit. There are many walks and lookouts around the area, so we have plenty of interesting hikes to do.

"Hinterland" is German (and used in the very same context), how did this get into your language ... ???

I have used the term for many years. In Australia it generally means the countryside/ hills inland behind the coast. Wikipedia says this... Hinterland is a German word meaning "the land behind" (a city, a port, or similar). The term's use in English was first documented by geographer George Chisholm in his Handbook of Commercial Geography (1888). Originally the term was associated with the area of a port where materials for export and import are stored and shipped, subsequently the use of the word expanded to include any area under the influence of a particular human settlement.
