The Sutton Place Hotel (1967, WZMH Architects), Toronto.

This photo was taken in 2010. From 2015 to 2019 the building was extensively modified -- new outside, new inside, new storeys on top -- and converted to condos. It now has retro lower floors and more contemporary upper ones.

Will S., Fred Fouarge, buonacoppi, m̌ ḫ and 13 other people have particularly liked this photo

Architectural style based upon the design of a shelving display unit for music audio cassettes. Think Gherkin, Cheesegrater, Shard. The architects simply look around their kitchens and back yards for inspiration.

I think the Gherkin was actually inspired by the medicine cabinet, TLC. It should have been called the Suppository. Toronto was madly in love with modernism for a long time, which was how this got built. And WZMH are still designing retreaded modernism. Unfortunately, the building now looks worse, not just boring but pretentious as well.

I suspect The Limbo is correct! :-) Great compositon, John.

Thanks, George. I certainly agree with TLC. The widespread admiration for outlandish buildings is perplexing. Or the preceding admiration for dull buildings like this one (which seems to have been widely admired when it opened). Unfortunately, Sutton Place, now called the Britt, has been transformed into a pseudo-hip building which is just as boring but pretentious on top of it.

I know virtually nothing about architectural styles.........I am impressed by the way you always look for the unusual perspectives when taking your architectural shots, and even more impressed that most of them work very well...........including this one!
