Uno Prii

Uno Prii
20 Prince Arthur Ave, Toronto (1968, Uno Prii).

Uno Prii designed many apartment buildings in Toronto (and many elsewhere) in the 1960s, although other Toronto architects scorned them. His sin seems to have been that unlike them he didn't consider a big box with boxy balconies stuck to the outside the epitome of elegance. In a 1960s guide to Toronto architecture photos of his buildings are provided as comic relief, and his name is not given.

But he kept putting up cylindrical buildings, buildings with curves, and buildings with colour, and finally people are coming to respect his work.

The PiP at upper left shows a view of the lower floors of this building, where its curves are more evident.

And here's a link to several more photographs of his buildings, including a longer view of this one:

Regardless of the architect's credentials, this makes a good abstract photo, with a touch of whimsy in the potted plant. A touch of genius to frame the shot to include that.

The potted plant is a splendid touch. I rather like the uniformity of the building.

Thanks, Jean. I suppose part of the attraction of these buildings (regardless of other architects' opinions, he built around 250 apartment buildings) is the strict regularity of parts of the builidngs set off by big arcs.

Great lines and geometry..........and I like the colours too. I was about to mention the potted plant until Jean beat me to it.

Beautifully composed and taken John.

Fascinating image John, almost abstract, but pulled back into the 'real' world with that potted plant. Make for an interesting edit too I imagine as a mono, but with the plant left to 'pop' as a selected colour!

Thanks, Paul. I think you've explained the appeal of the plant, too. I'll be on the lookout now for similar juxtapositions, so thanks again.

Great photo - facinating that there is just the one flower pot in all those balconies. I wonder what it feels like to live in one of the apartments - balcony recessed verus external. Would it feel a bit claustrophobic? Or maybe it would feel more private and comforting.

Enjoyed in 'm m multiples s s' - thanks for adding.

Thanks, raingirl. I had a recessed balcony in Toronto, and it provided more protection against the weather than the open one I have now. This building also still towers over most of its neighbourhood, so that would furnish some relief of claustrophobia.
