With glowing hearts

With glowing hearts
Canada has, yet again, been named the second-best country in the world by US News & World Report:
globalnews.ca/news/3293192/canada-2nd-best-country-2017-world-rankings-survey

The ranks are stacked against the New World, though, by the inclusion of a heritage category. That's giving the Old World a few thousand years' head start there, eh?! You call that fair? You call that fair?

Well, I'm sure Mr. Trump'll be tweeting about this and demanding Congress investigate what an American publication is doing engaging in this Europhile jiggery-pokery.

We whupped them, though, which is good enough.

Oh -- congratulations, Switzerland.

Just wait until we build a wall between us - across various small and Great lakes, of course.

And may we continue to have the resolve to be un-American in every possible way. ;)

That's out national purpose, Pappy. We were founded not to be American. But perhaps that's an Ontario perspective. Ontario was pretty well founded by Loyalists. Still, I'm glad we stuck to parliamentary government.

An unusual but interesting way to display the flag there John...........but I like it. Well done Canada...........now you need to crack the number 1 spot next year!

It has always struck me as odd, too, Keith, but it does work. I think to get to number 1 we'll have to persuade a European country to let us annex them. Or part of one. East Anglia doesn't seem to be much appreciated in the UK. Maybe they'd like to be part of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Thanks, Maggs. The structure has been getting more complicated by the day. Maybe I'll drop by tomorrow and see how it's looking now.

And the Irish, Jean. Ontario's history, in particular, was in large part determined by the Orange Order (it pretty well ran Toronto into the 1950s), and it was important federally as well. I grew up, by the way, in the first city in Ontario to become non-sectarian. In 1877 the Irish in London, Ontario decided they were wasting too much time fighting so they formed a single Irish organization open to everyone. Today it is the largest philanthropic organization there. As a result the city also has a tradition of non-sectarianism, and that has been an important influence in my life. Not that I belong to any sect.

Doesn't seem like it from what I've been hearing, with the loony left in control.

You're assuming the left is always loony, Isisbridge. Bloomberg News has attributed the soundness of Canada's economy to hard-headed socialism. Canada may be the last place on earth where that still exists. In Canada it no longer survives in our supposedly socialist party, either, but in the Liberals.

Socialism has two basic principles: a mixed economy and rights founded in the individual. Most "socialists" today have abandoned both principles. These days a large proportion of conservatives are among those most devoted to these principles.

Assuming no such thing. I was thinking of transgender pronouns, for example, and the end of free speech. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LpbnKvyZrc

Sorry. What we usually think of idiotic bills like this is that they'll be struck down by the Supreme Court. The SC has been saving us a lot lately. What I most worry about here is the hate speech laws. They're being used less, but they're still antidemocratic. Of course, we haven't got as far as the UK, where street preachers are arrested for being menacing.

Sometimes I'm glad I'm old.

I don't imagine will make much difference, but of course that's not the point. This is politicians passing laws not to help people but to make themselves look caring and concerned. But that's the story of the Wynne government in Ontario.

Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grand-children are once more slaves.

Oh, I think thee's been a propaganda effort in this country and others to make people submissive. After the pre-boomers and boomers started questioning everything, schooling changed to emphasize getting along with others, being inclusive, etc., and people have been taught to worry about everything, especially their pensions. So Berkeley students, who 50 years ago were fighting for freedom of speech, are now trying to suppress it.

And you get "leaders" like the head of the Ontario Conservatives, who hasn't said a word about Bill 89. I think he figures he's going to win the next election, so he won't rock the boat, but the Conservatives have managed to throw away three consecutive elections they should have won.
