inspired by constructivism

inspired by constructivism
Cut-paper collage 7 1/2" x 10 1/2"

This is inspired by "Dynamic Suprematism," a painting by Kazimir Malevich. I'm a little vague on my art history here, but I think constructivism was one of the "-isms" Stalin declared to be "Western decadence." So Malevich made up the word "suprematism" to describe what he was doing, which was basically constructivism.

In my eight years of making collages, I've done three of these I call "inspired by" because I don't know what else to call them. They're sort of like copies, in the sense that I'm looking at an artwork while cutting out collage pieces that mimic shapes & colors in the painting (or whatever it is) and gluing them down in relation to each other to create a collage version of it. But they're not at all copies, because the collage elements usually have textures & colors that are different from the artwork I'm looking at, and because I usually leave stuff out.

If you look at Kazimir Malevich's "Dynamic Suprematism" (actually one of two paintings for which he used that title), you'll see what I mean. (Sorry I linked to a commercial site selling art prints, but I couldn't find it anywhere else.)

I like making these collage tributes to artworks I admire, and I learn from doing them, too. Any suggestions about what I should title them?

I do this too, at times, as both a learning experience & for the sheer pleasure of following in the path of something that moves me personally & deeply. It's not so much a desire to copy as it is a desire to participate in the original, inspiring work, I think. And far from being "a mere copy" it's actually a potential way of opening new possibilities within one's own creative self.

Maybe call such pieces "Participations" then? :)

Great comment Tim, especially the bits about following in the path, opening up new possibilities within oneself, and participating... in the cultural flow.

“There can be no question of painting in Suprematism.” Malevich.
“Objects died yesterday.” Rodchenko.
“I have overcome the impossible and made gulfs with my breath!” Malevich.
Malevich’s Futurist Manifesto is pretty unreadable, and not much inspiration for titles!
Olga Rozanova looks like an interesting artist to research.
All this from “100 Artists Manifestos” Futuriststs to Stuckists, but still not much inspiration for titles...
“WHAT’S NEEDED - IS NO REST.” Rodchenko.
