Non-professional photographers were limited to a 6 inch 200 mm lens which meant slow glass and high ISO. Grainy shots were inevitable.

Colin is quite right. I still feel fortunate to have been able to bring my camera since for years, photos were banned without a permit. The arena where the event was held normally bans cameras, but the US Figure Skating policy overrode it.
