Edinburgh Calton Hill ‘Parthenon’ (#1166)

Edinburgh Calton Hill ‘Parthenon’ (#1166)
This looked particularly elegant and classical, and I wanted to explore it more, but the wind/rain were just too high. It’s the National Monument to Scotland, a memorial to the soldiers and sailors who died in the Napoleonic Wars. The monument is modeled after the Parthenon in Athens; construction on it started in 1826 and ended in 1829 due to running out of money, and it remains unfinished (see Wikipedia link).

Though it presents a striking image at the top Calton Hill, it seems odd to me that a memorial to Scottish soldiers would be modeled after a Greek temple – but then I’m not familiar with the Scottish mindset of the 1800’s…
