Clarkdale, AZ coal? (# 0496)

Clarkdale, AZ coal? (# 0496)
On the edge of the grounds of the former smelter, some buildings that seemed to date back to the times of the smelter, and a very large formation of what appears to be coal. There is a cement operation (later picture) in the area which uses high volumes of coal, but it has its own coal pile. Is this plateau of black coal, or toxic waste from the days of copper mining?

It's slag from the smelter. When we were there we saw a note about an experimental process underway to rework the slag for metals. Dunno about the current status--this was several years ago. Slags are usually black due to a high content of reduced iron (Fe++).

PS: You get some good close-up views from the train!

Thanks for this info, it helps me in understanding such things. It doesn't look like much of anything has been done with it.
