Durango & Silverton Rwy (# 0325)

Durango & Silverton Rwy (# 0325)
The railyard of the Durango & Silverton, in Durango, CO.

The Durango & Silverton is a narrow-gauge railroad derived from the narrow-gauge Denver & Rio Grande. The D&RG narrow-gauge opened in 1882 and operated as both a freight and passenger railroad serving much of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico until the 1970’s; with the exception of the Cumbres & Toltec and this, the narrow-gauge has either been abandoned or converted to standard-gauge. The section of narrow-gauge between Durango and Silverton became the Durango & Silverton Narrow-gauge passenger (tourist) railroad in 1981. The Wikipedia page provides a comprehensive overview of the railroad:

In 1966, when I first rode the Silverton on a family trip, my dad & I wandered around the switchyard after returning to Durango. There were lots and lots of narrow-gage freight cars--at that time they were still running freight. They shut down the freight service in 1968, IIRC.

The Cumbres and Toltec runs over a portion of those lines. From what I had found, they ran that line from Durango into the 60's -- I didn't pick up the exact year.
