Astoria wharf/trolley (#1306)

Astoria wharf/trolley (#1306)
Two things: 1) on the left, the remains of a boiler from a cannery that burned down about 50 years ago, 2) on the right, the first condominiums built on the river, in the 1970's. Per the narrator on the trolley, the condominiums were initially sold at a loss due to a market crash, but have turned around in recent years.

I am not sure I would wish to invest my cash in a property supported like that over the water.

It would feel vulnerable to me as well, but this may actually be more stable than housing built over the "land" areas that are nearby since most of the flat areas near the river are all fill dating back to times before the understandings of making stable fill in an earthquake zone.

I'd have to have a lot of confidence in whoever maintains the pilings. And I'd have to hope the Cascadia doesn't go off anywhere near here in my lifetime. I suspect people in this and people in the fill zone are probably equally screwed when that happens.
