Astoria wharf/trolley (#1312)
At the sardine plant on the wharf; the majority of the sardine catch is used as bait for tuna fishing (or enticements for seagulls)

Hopefully they're keeping the harvest at a sustainable level. Back in the early aughts we visited Monterey and saw what was left of Cannery Row. It's all upscale tourist-related businesses now, of course, but it turned out the fishery had crashed in the 1950s--20 years or so after the Steinbeck novel--and still hasn't recovered.

My sense was that we had reached a point all along the west coast where fishing had been reduced to the level that would be sustainable. I was stationed in Monterey in 1968 when Cannery Row was basically abandoned factories with only the beginnings of the conversion into a tourist site, I wish I'd been mature enough then to know the value of photographing those remnants!
