Golden Gate Natl Cemetery (#0963)

Golden Gate Natl Cemetery (#0963)
Considering the state of politics around the globe and the increasing militaristic nativism in politics, it seemed that this trip was a good time for visiting a place I’d only been to once in my 40+ years of living and exploring in the SF Bay Area – one of its largest, but little known, veterans’ cemeteries.

Golden Gate National Cemetery is relatively unknown among Bay Area residents, probably because it is somewhat difficult to access and has become increasingly hemmed in by growth (see nearby pictures).

The cemetery, founded in 1941, is 161.5 acres and contains 137,435 internments. The cemetery is often confused with the much smaller military cemetery at the Presidio of San Francisco, but this larger cemetery is in San Bruno because the residents of San Francisco had voted (in 1937) to ban the construction of new cemeteries in the city. (see Wikipedia link).
