Yosemite Awahnee (#0566)

Yosemite Awahnee (#0566)
A plaque describing the history of the Awahnee. The important point (noted in the text on the right) here is that early directors of the National Park Service realized that in order to maintain a quality National Park Service it was essential to have the support of the wealthy, thus the need for such luxurious accommodations in parks. Described in the text on the left is the fact that the Awahnee served as a Navy convalescent hospital during WWII.

I tend to ignore the lodge aspect of the parks I've visited, which vastly undersells the importance of that buy-in from the wealthy. I don't see much of a similar buy-in today.

Possibly because of my very positive experiences with the lodging company in the past at Yosemite, I've paid a fair amount of attention to the lodges and related (Curry Village was wonderful, though its name has now been changed). For me they have provided an interesting interpretation. Unfortunately, they seem to have shifted in recent years from being something that even the less-than-wealthy could do as a splurge, to being out of reach. And, now that the names are no longer inviolable, they become even more just a chance for some to be ostentatious.
