Mono Lake - Panum Crater (#0479)

Mono Lake - Panum Crater (#0479)
In the center of the picture is Panum Crater, a volcanic crater active only about 600 years ago. It is in one of the Mono craters (link below) which rise much higher and are to my right. There's an easy hike to Panum crater, but the road into it was rough and I needed to get across the Sierras, so didn't take time to Explore.

It erupted just about the time of the Black Death in Europe. We'd often take field trips there. It's young enough to have preserved the tephra ring, that ring of loose debris around the central rhyolitic (and obsidian) plug. Presumably the older Mono craters also had such rings, but they're all eroded away.
