US 395 Walker River (#0503)

US 395 Walker River (#0503)
One particularly pretty, but hard to photograph, part of US 395 is where it runs through a relatively narrow valley alongside the Walker river. Despite there being no elevated points to get a good view, it was encouraging to see the strong water flow after years of drought.

And this canyon (and the highway therein) were utterly devastated by the flood of New Year's '97. The road had to be completely rebuilt, from scratch. For six months Hwy 395 traffic was diverted at Topaz Lake over into Smith Valley, coming up into Bridgeport from the south along NV 338/CA 182--not a road built for that kind of traffic! You can still see lots of places along the canyon here with prominent erosional scour from the flood--I've got a few pix here and there, but as you say it's hard to photograph without getting out and walking! A sad story from the flood--a family-owned dude ranch right at the mouth of the canyon, where it exits by Walker, was utterly obliterated--even all their riding horses were drowned. And, of course, they didn't have flood insurance-- IIRC the establishment had been there for decades beforehand.

I read about that flood, there's a good plaque describing it at this site. I do remember hearing about it when it happened, but I didn't know the area so well then and so didn't grasp how big an issue it was.
