Roosevelt Dam (1889)
Roosevelt Dam, creating Roosevelt Lake. The dam has a fascinating background, the evidence of which can be seen in the larger version of this picture. The dam seen here is essentially an overlay over the first Roosevelt Dam, finished in 1911. It was determined that it should be raised by 77 feet to reduce flooding risk, so a new dam was built in the early 1990's that basically encases the original dam. Thus the new dam has some interesting artifacts including the original powerhouse in the lower portion of the picture, some basically hidden steps in about the center (see the note), and other construction which appears to be related to first dam (see the note).
