Apache Trail Apache Lake overlook (1885)

Apache Trail Apache Lake overlook (1885)
Apache Lake overlook. Just about 7 miles after this point, I took an access road down to an interesting campground on the lake. Leaving the campground, a sharp rock punctured my right front tire, creating an adventure I had not expected. Since I was on a dirt road where there was no cell phone access, I couldn't call AAA. Luckily a camper helped me change the wheel. Later, in Globe, I was told that the tire was too severely ruptured and would have to be replaced. I now have a stronger appreciation for the regular forewarnings to have a good spare when touring remotely!

I've been lucky enough on backroads to have gone many years without that happening. And saying that, I've probably taunted the tire gods enough that I should make sure my little donut spare has air.

I've had tires fixed when out exploring in Ely and in Bisbee (and I think one other place), but none were as severe damage to the tire as this one and both were situations where there was cell phone access and I could call AAA to do the tire changing. The problem was having the strength to get the lug nuts off. Luckily the guy who offered to help worked in the mines and handled easily what I was making no headway with.

About half the time when I change a tire, I wind up having to jump up and down on the lug wrench.

The last time I had anything like that happen was when I hit a pothole in Hammond, Indiana. Fortunately, there was a tire store within sight of the pothole. I asked the guy if he'd dug the hole himself. He was getting a lot of business that night.
