Devils Slide tunnel 3744a
I was quite shocked to discover that the Devils Slide tunnel project near Pacifica was as far along as it was. I hadn't driven that section of CA-1 in about 2 years, so didn't realize that the project had even started.
For decades there had been debates about what to do about the Devils Slide section of CA-1 that is just south of Pacifica. The section of the highway was often closed either by slides or be sections sliding into the Pacific, but the debates about how to fix that had seemed endless. Inland from the road is an area of seemingly untouched wilderness and debates about whether to pave over it or tunnel through it seemed to have no easy answer. Obviously the answer was to tunnel through it.
This picture is of the northern approach, looking south on what will be CA-1.
